If you've got a big move coming up and you're dreading packing, don't worry. You can skip that task. Save yourself the trouble, and let removalists handle the packing. However, there are just a few things that you may want to do yourself.

1. Purge Your Possessions

Removalists are fabulous at coming in and packing up your stuff for a move. That's ideal if you want to move every single thing you own, but if you are like most people, you probably want to get rid of a few things before the move.

Before the removalists arrive, take some time to go through closets, drawers and storage spaces. Find what you no longer need or want, and donate it or throw it away. If you don't get through the whole house, that's okay. It's pretty easy to purge stuff as you unpack.

2. Pack a Day Bag

When packing up a house, removalists are extremely thorough. They get every single item from every nook and cranny in the house. However, you will need a few items to get through the move. To make sure the removalists don't grab items you want left out, pack a day bag.

The bag should contain everything you need from the moment the removalists arrive to pack up your existing home to the moment they unload the boxes at your new home. Depending on how far away your new home is and how long the move is slated to last, you may need anything from a change of clothes and toiletries to a few kitchen essentials.

3. Put Aside Personal Items as Desired

If you have any personal items that you don't want anyone to see, you may want to pack them on your own as well. However, this is not necessary. Removalists are trained to be discreet, and there is never any judgment on a client's personal effects.

4. Remember the Children

Removals can be stressful for children, and because of that, you may want to keep out a few items for your child. In other cases, you may want to let your children pack a small box of their most treasured possessions—you can move that box in the car, and they don't have to worry about where it is. Little touches like that can help children get through a move.

5. Consider Valuables

Some people who are moving also prefer to pack their own valuables. In most cases, however, it's better to leave the job to the pros. They have the training and packaging materials to pack up anything and get it to your new home safely.
